The fleet said goodbye to the Big Apple. Fittingly, Paul Cayard’s Pirates of the Caribbean led from the gun. It was a hard windward slog virtually to the Grand Banks where ABN AMRO ONE saw a new wind system developing. They go from first to last to reach the new wind, jump into the lead and are gone.

The winds build to +50 knots and the seas are short, square and uncomfortable. Then every sailor’s worst nightmare comes true as Seb Josse reports a Man Overboard. With amazing skill ABN AMRO TWO recovers their man, but can’t resuscitate him.

Then movistar reports that the keel has broken away from its aft bearing. They abandon ship and are picked up by ABN AMRO TWO. ABN AMRO ONE sails on to win by almost 200 miles; Ericsson is a happy second. ABN AMRO TWO transfers her passengers in Falmouth. Hans’ body is repatriated to the Netherlands.
