Plans for the events programme at the St Petersburg finish for the 2008-09 race have been unveiled this week at the Baltic Boat Show.
A focal point of the show is the Volvo Ocean Race stand, a collaboration between Lenta, the Russian hypermarket chain and backer of the Russian race entry, Volvo Trucks Russia and Team Russia.
The biggest stand of the exhibition tells the story of the race which finishes in St Petersburg in June next year.
Natalya Fedorova, the St Petersburg Finish Port Manager, presented a brief review of the events which will take place.
“The Race village will be located in the very historic centre of St Petersburg on the Peter and Paul’s Fortress overlooking the world famous Hermitage and will be open for public for several days,” Fedorova said. “The finish week end will embrace multiple festive events on land and the water area between the Trinity and the Palace bridges.”
The local government sees the race finish as an ideal means of showcasing St Petersburg, particularly to foreign audiences and visitors to the city.
“The Volvo Ocean Race finish will definitely raise the positive image and prestige of St Petersburg abroad,” Vyacheslav Chazov, the Head of the St Petersburg Sports Committee, said. “There are only several cities in the world that can boast so many architectural, cultural and historic masterpieces and St Petersburg is one of them.
“This is why we are putting every effort to host the finish at the highest level and to once again show that the city is one of the best places to see.”
Meanwhile, Volvo Trucks have launched a special edition of a Volvo FH Ocean truck with exclusive configuration and the style of the race.
